The Starlight Gatherer Suite: The Journey of Starlight Gathering

The Star has seen it through.
When Fury regained Passion.
When Curse regained Faith.
When Escape regained Bravery.
When Jealousy regained Affection.
When Despair regained Hope.
When Arrogance regained Pride.
The Star has seen it through, together with its twinkles.

Starlight gathering is forgiveness of sins
Starlight gathering is a wonder of night
Starlight, the shining of hope
Your shines are the starlight
And it shall be bestowed upon you, the Star which you have longed for—

Wish you have a simple happy life.

Cinematic and Epic Orchestral

This piece is based on a brief titled "Cinematic and Epic Orchestral." I envisioned it as the opening theme for a fantasy TV series featuring battle scenes and epic wars. Inspired by Ramin Djawadi's "Main Title" from the TV series Game of Thrones, I adopted a similar structure and instrumentation to compose this piece. To enhance the emotional depth, I included a slower and softer passage before the buildup in the final part of the piece.

Akaki joou to aoki kishi ~Main teema~ (The Red Queen and The Blue Knight ~Main Theme~) is the main theme for the story of a progressive queen, Adira Charolette Vaillant, and her female knight, Sellua Alessia Azor. There are deaths caused by power struggles, natural disasters, and hatreds; as well as bonds between masters and subordinates, family members, friends, and lovers. No one wants to let their loved ones die, but death usually comes suddenly.

Lust and Loneliness

The concept of Lust and Loneliness is based on the result of a random emotion generator—lust. Inspired by funari's music in the adaptation of Kouya Takao, one of the classic rakugo stories, during "Yuyuko Tanaka's Classical Rakugo Theater" of the Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight -Re LIVE- Reading Theatre series, I chose to create a slow, sultry, and smoky atmosphere in a small pub to set the scene and introduce the loneliness of oiran, the highest-ranking courtesans in the Edo period in Japan, alongside the emotion of lust. It is a slow jazz ballad with a solo saxophone expressively improvising the melody. I adopted the chord progressions of Autumn Leaves, a jazz standard, and made use of the timbre of a soft piano, brush sounds on a snare drum, some pads, and a drop-C double bass to create the atmosphere.

Masquerade Quartet

This music is inspired by the story with the same title in Japanese written by the Composer in 2019. The four members in the quartet in the story wear masks and dress up as a queen, a knight, a princess, and a prince respectively when performing to hide their identities because of their personal struggles and difficulties. The piece is supposed to be one of their standard repertoire representing their mysterious and anxious nature.

The piece begins with an introduction led by the second violin's volume swells. The first violin adds a layer to it later but then gives way to the melody played by the viola and cello. It rejoins when the second violin starts playing the waltz motif which signifies the start of the masquerade ball.

The ball is interrupted by the viola and cello's snap pizzicato. The lower strings bring an increasingly nervous and tense atmosphere by playing the minor 2nd interval and increasing the speed on one note played repeatedly, followed by the first violin's dissonant chord. The quartet then plays a series of quick C whole tone scales which forms an augmented chord at the end of the section.

The tense and creepy atmosphere continues with the soft tremolo played by the violins and viola in their high registers. The motif used in the waltz earlier reappears but its accompaniment changes to relatively eerie swells, and later to loud and staccato broken chords, bringing the music to the climax.

Here comes an interlude in a slower tempo. The first violin plays a depressing variation of the motif, representing the first violinist's upset mood caused by her severe stage fright in the original story. Reflecting the relationships among the members of the quartet in the story, the second violin responds to the first violin with an ascending variation and leads the quartet back to their full strength.

I slept, and dreamed that life was joy

I slept, and dreamed that life was joy takes its text from Rabindranath Tagore's poem, and Ellen Sturgis Hooper's poem published in 1840 in The Dial. I chose these texts with thoughts about life. I serve stories and music.

In Japanese, toutoi (尊い) basically means “precious” or “sacred” or “noble”. When fans describe their oshi (推し, favs) toutoi, it means, for example, their favs are so caring towards one another that the fans find those actions or scenes heartwarming or adorable. This piece is, therefore, a song to praise my two favourite actresses, Yuuka Sugai and Yurika Nakamura, for their precious moments on and off screen.

I chose chorale as the style for this piece because the feeling of toutoi is, in some sense, religious. Our favs are like our gods and goddesses. We are deeply grateful to them and want them to know our appreciation. Chorale is a good way to express this with a twist.

Storm

This music is written in 2023 for An Immortal and a Time Traveler, a novel written in Chinese by the Composer herself in 2017. The novel tells the love story of two young girls. One girl, Shang Qixuan is immortal, while another, Lu Zhaochen, is a time traveler.

The piece is specifically written for the time in the story when the two girls have become a couple but Qixuan is avoiding Zhaochen because she is afraid of physically hurting Zhaochen again. Zhaochen has made every effort to approach Qixuan but she keeps failing to make Qixuan trust herself again.

The music begins with a piano motif which represents Qixuan's anxiety, closely followed by a response by the violin which represents Zhaochen's efforts to empathize with Qixuan. The introduction and the increasing dynamics of the choir symbolize their intensifying conflict. In the latter part of the piece, the violin breaks in with a desperate theme in the high register, bringing both the music and the conflict to the climax. The last chord, played softly, represents a temporary truce to the conflict.

To Yuki (Tender Love)

Love you always.

Yours,
Jun

G 點之亂

G 點之亂 (The G Point Rebellion) is an allegory of my friend GoN's real-life story. In December 2020, GoN, a clarinetist and game streamer, announced a betting game during a streaming session. However, he mistakenly set it as a poll, causing the audience to spend their channel points (G points) on voting. After a while, the audience noticed the mistake and requested the return of their G points, but GoN was unable to refund them, causing outrage among the audience, including his close friends. One of his friends then described this incident as the G Point Rebellion during the dynasty of GoN. My piece is based on this story from the point of view of a storyteller, similar to the traditional Han Chinese performing art of storytelling. This is why I wrote this piece for solo erhu, a Chinese two-stringed bowed musical instrument that was usually used for accompaniment in the past.

To better present the narrative, I drew references from various existing music. Inspired by songs about farming life, such as "Yanato Rice Planting Song" from Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin and an erhu piece called "Rice-Sprout Song," I used similar rhythms and articulations, especially pizzicato, to recreate the groove of farmers' working life. For Emperor GoN's party, I drew inspiration from the rhythms of Chinese traditional music that represent similar crowd scenes. To highlight the part when people notice that something went wrong, I drew inspiration from a similar scene in Revue Starlight: The Movie, using rhythms different from the previous sections and dissonant notes to create the atmosphere. The rhythms of the rebellion part are inspired from "People's Song" and "At the End of the Day" from Les Misérables and an erhu piece called "Ballad of Lan-hua-hua".

Kishi no saigo (The Knight's Death) is written in 2023 for Akaki joou to aoki kishi (The Red Queen and the Blue Knight), a script written in Japanese by me in 2022. The script tells the story of a queen, Adira Charolette Vaillant, and her female knight, Sellua Alessia Azor. The story is set in an imaginary universe similar to the Middle Ages in Europe. The story begins with a rebellion led by conservative officials and citizens, forcing Adira and Sellua to escape from the royal palace.

The piece is specifically written for the time when Sellua dies for saving Adira's life at the end of the story during the last battle.

The music is inspired by J.S. Bach's Sonata for Violin Solo No. 1 in G Minor, BWV 1001 - 1. Adagio and Chinese North-eastern folk song River of Tears (Jiang He Shui) rearranged for Erhu by Huang Hai Huai. Similar to River of Tears, it is written from Adira's point of view. It consists of three sections, representing Adira's sorrow, memories, and anger respectively.

The first part begins with a cadenza-like passage which is like san-ban (free rhythm) in Chinese music. It is full of emotions, showing the sorrow and grief of losing the one Adira loves from way back. It utilizes viola's higher positions to express the intensity of the loss.

The second part is performed relatively softly and sweetly, representing Adira's fond and nostalgic memories with Sellua since childhood. The quick arpeggios in bar 14 and 15 symbolize Adira's regret for not spending much personal time with Sellua after her coronation because of their increasing status differences. She wishes Sellua has reciprocated her feelings much more earlier.

The last part, which is the recapitulation, represents Adira's anger towards Sellua's death caused by the conservatives. I further stretch the rhythm and ornaments the melody appeared in the exposition to make the music more emotionally intense. The music ends with a slower passage with fading harmonics, express Adira's wish that Sellua may rest in peace after a series of suffering during their escape.

The Final Rehearsal

This song tells the story of an amateur five-person a cappella group. The group has been established for a while, but the dissatisfaction between the leader and the members is growing. The leader feels that the members are not working hard enough, and that they are holding her back from achieving her ambitions; the members feel that the leader is too serious and harsh, and hence they can’t enjoy singing. Caught in the middle, The group manager, who is the leader’s friend, can only lament why both sides do not try to listen to each other.

This song takes place at the beginning of the show. As mentioned in the title, this is the last rehearsal before an important performance. However, member A is late. Member B is tone-deaf. Member C is sloppy. The leader is therefore extremely unhappy. The group is mostly rehearsing at the first half of the song, but there are solo parts and distinctive singing styles that reflect each characters' feelings. The argument comes to the surface in the second half. In the end, the three members leave angrily but the leader still does not care. The manager then tells the leader his opinion, but it makes the leader leave in a rage.

This song was originally written for a cappella only, but later added piano for technical reasons. It was developed and premiered through the “Blank Page: New Musicals Platform."
